Windows 8 Takes Your Settings to the Cloud
A popular theme among Microsoft's Windows 7 commercials has been this idea of the cloud, and it appears the cloud will play an even more integral role in the next version of Windows. Some astute beta testers have found settings called "Roaming Options" in the User Accounts settings of Windows 8.
While I don't have a copy of this beta build in hand, this is what I'm gathering: these settings would be sent to the cloud and would be retrievable on a friend's computer or on another device.

The word "device" is used in the settings description, which would lead me to believe Microsoft might be angling to provide a more seamless experience between Windows PCs and Windows Phone with minimal work on the user's end.
Windows 8 will apparently put personalization, accessibility, language, application, and system settings on the cloud, as well as credential information. This means you could walk up to a friend's computer, obtain your desktop profile from the cloud, and it would essentially be like being in front of your home computer. Pretty neat if you ask me!
One more cool feature? Windows will give you the option to kill this functionality when either on a paid network or one that has low bandwidth. I'm not sure how it may be able to discern this, but this could be vital for those of us increasingly on mobile connections and subject to those hated bandwidth caps.
Linux and Mac OS Are Fastest-Growing Operating Systems
Microsoft may still dominate the operating system market, but Linux and Apple's Mac OS platforms were the fastest-growing in 2010, according to new data from Gartner.
Worldwide operating system revenue totaled $30.4 billion in 2010, Gartner reported Wednesday, representing an increase of 7.8 percent from 2009. Within that overall market, Microsoft still claims the leading position, with a 78.6 percent market share.
What's particularly interesting, though, is the rapid growth being shown by both Linux and Macs in the server and client operating system segments, respectively.
On the client side, for instance--which as a whole grew 9.3 percent in 2010--Mac OS was the fastest-growing subsegment in 2010, even though Windows was still the largest client OS player. Apple's platform grew 15.8 percent to $520 million in 2010, fueled by what Gartner reports were strong sales of Mac desktops and laptops.
Microsoft's Windows client business, by comparison, grew by only 9.2 percent.
"Apple's making of Mac OS as a 'cool' client computing OS has attracted a group of loyal customers on Mac devices and platforms," Gartner explained. "Apple's continuous innovations in mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, have prompted sales of other Apple devices and will continue to drive Mac sales."
Red Hat's Reign
On the server side, meanwhile--which grew 5.7 percent last year--the open source Linux operating system was the fastest-growing subsegment in 2010 as end users adopted more open-standard systems, Gartner reported.
Red Hat, in particular, has dominated the commercial Linux server market. Revenue from Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) server licenses went up 18.6 percent to $592 million in 2010, in fact, taking a 58.2 percent share of the Linux server market.
Microsoft's Windows server business, by contrast, grew by only 7.5 percent in 2010.
Also claiming significant share in the overall operating system arena were IBM, with 7.5 percent, and HP, with 3.7 percent.
'A Viable Alternative'
"The market has accepted Linux as a viable alternative to Unix and other proprietary OSes in mission-critical environments," Gartner wrote, explaining the operating system's strong showing last year.
Indeed, hardly a week goes by without some fresh good news for Linux these days. Now thatNatty Narwhal is out, I'll be watching closely to see what new gains are made
Motorola Xoom LTE update delayed until summer, same time as Bionic launch
Motorola's just finished giving the news and the numbers on its quarterly financial report, and there was one bit of badness that we just had to share: the Xoom LTE upgrade has been delayed. We won't be seeing it until summer according to Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha, which is also when we'll be seeing the Bionic, a delay that we were already sulking about. Jha was a little vague about what the "issue" was that is causing the delay, only that whatever quality concern there is applies to both devices, and it could simply be that the company is waiting for its LTE rollout to get a little further along. Net result: one less G for Xoom owners until the summer, and no Bionic at all until then. Bummer.
In terms of the numbers: Motorola says that it shipped over 250,000 Xooms in the first quarter of the year, and managed net revenues of $3 billion. That's up 22 percent from this time last year, which brought losses down to $.27 per share -- much nicer than the $.72 in Q1 2010. Mobile device revenues were up 30 percent and 9.1 million total mobile devices were sold, of those almost half (4.1 million) were smartphones.
Sprint starts selling Motorola Xoom WiFi (not WiMAX) May 8th for $600
We've gotten multiple clandestine clues that Sprint would sell the Xoom -- a calendar entry here, anaccessory there -- but there was nary a confirming peep from the Now Network itself. Until today, when it announced that it would join the legion of retailers peddling the Wi-Fi version of Motorola's tablet for $599.99 on May 8th. That's right, the carrier will start selling folks the sweet Honeycomb slate soon enough, but a Xoom sans Sprint cellular data is a bit of a letdown. One question, Mr. Hesse, when will we get one with WiMAX? PR's after the break.
Shocker! Free Android apps outnumber free iPhone apps
Good news for Android users who hate paying for stuff: according to new numbers from Netherlands-based mobile analytics group Distimo, there are now more free apps available for Google's mobile OS than the iPhone, at 134,342 to 121,845. There are a few things to consider here: first, when one adds free iPad-only apps, the total number of gratis iOS apps increases to a more competitive 132,239. And then there's Apple's sometimes rigorous vetting process, which has probably played a role in its numeric slippage -- after all, this report doesn't highlight things like legality, repetition, or the overall number of apps dedicated to making farting noises. Also, Apple has a lot more premium apps, giving it the overall lead at 333,124 to 206,143 -- but between Android's rapid growth and what the report terms iOS's relative stagnation, Distimo expects Google to take the top spot in five months' time, outnumbering iPhone and iPad apps combined -- a rough scenario for Cupertino to stomach, no doubt, but at least the company will still have Windows Phone to kick around a while longer. Logitech's 'disappointing' Q4 results not helped by poor Revue sales; will cut price to $249
There wasn't much good news for Logitech investors when the company revealed its results for the financial fourth quarter, as it fell far below targets for sales and revenue. Most of the blame went towards weak performance in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, but it also suffered from far lower than expected sales of the Google TV-powered Revue and its accessories, accounting for only $5 million in sales, down from $22 million the quarter before and short of its estimate of $18 million. Beyond fixing its issues overseas, CEO Gerald Quindlen still sees a future where internet connected TVs follow a similar path to smartphones and cited the next generation of Google TV as a major opportunity. Starting in May, the company will cut the price of the Revue to $249 (which is still at least $50 too high) and plans to "re-accelerate" its marketing at "the appropriate time" -- probably sometime after Google I/O and the addition of the Android Market. As for that current hardware, both the Revue and the Sony Google TV products received unspecified "security updates" today, although Qriocity and Music Unlimited access remained offline on our Sony Internet TV unit. So let's do the postmortem and guess what contributed to the low sales more: high prices, a half baked product or ads featuring a hairy-legged TV and Kevin Bacon?
Barca eye league title as Mourinho loses rag
MADRID: Barcelona look to build on their morale-boosting 2-0 Champions League semifinal win over rivals Real Madrid by moving a step closer to their third consecutive league title with victory at promoted Real Sociedad on Saturday.
Two goals from Lionel Messi helped Barcelona put one foot in the Champions League final with the triumph over Madrid on Wednesday and now the focus returns to the league where the champions need just seven points from the remaining five games to retain their crown.
Barcelona lie eight points ahead of Real at the summit on 88 points and are on course to break the 100 points barrier and better the best ever league tally of 99 points, which they recorded last season.
"We are two wins and a draw away from being crowned league champions. After that we will think about the second semifinal (against Real Madrid) and getting to Wembley (for the final)." said Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.
Real have it all to do in the semi final second leg at Camp Nou next Tuesday, but need to put the European disappointment behind them and focus on collecting three points at home to Real Zaragoza on Saturday.
Real coach Jose Mourinho cut an angry figure after watching Pepe sent off on the hour mark in the painful defeat to foes Barcelona and the rivalry between the two sides cranked up a notch, with the Portuguese coach accusing Barcelona of receiving favouritism from referees and bemoaning the fact that his sides always ended up with ten men.
It was a long tirade from Mourinho in the post match press conference and he now faces disciplinary action for his controversial comments towards Barcelona and several high profile referees.
"We are playing a man's game and every time you play against Barcelona and you touch them, they go to the ground and cry like babies," said Real striker Emmanuel Adebayor.
In the wake of a third 'El Clasico' in 12 days little has been said about Saturday's match against Zaragoza who are fighting for their lives, one point above the relegation zone, and will hope Madrid have a European hangover.
Mourinho may choose to ring the changes with Gonzalo Higuain, Kaka and Karim Benzema all unused substitutes against Barcelona, while Ricardo Carvalho is back after missing Wednesday's match through suspension.
Barcelona may also rest stars with the return leg of the Champions League in mind with Messi, who has an incredible 52 goals this season with 31 in the league, likely to be given a break after picking up a knock in the Madrid game.
Valencia are a distant third, lying 17 points behind Real Madrid, and hope to put last weekend's 6-3 home drubbing by Real behind them with a win at strugglers Osasuna on Sunday.
Valencia are favourites to seal third, and the automatic Champions League qualification it brings, with Villarreal six points behind in fourth.
Osasuna will be pumped for the Valencia visit, however, as they occupy the final relegation place with games running out.
On Sunday Villarreal host a Getafe side that have been in the news with the Royal Emirates Group clinching a takeover of the club and talking of the Champions League, but for now the Madrid-based club are battling to stay in the division, lying two points above the bottom three.
Elsewhere a return of 10 points from 12 has helped Atletico Madrid challenge for a European spot and the capital side travel to Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday looking to move into the top six.
Argentine forward Sergio "Kun: Aguero has scored eight goals in his last six league games to push Atletico into contention and the club are level on points with sixth-placed Sevilla who travel to bottom side Almeria on Sunday.
Almeria look doomed lying 10 points from safety with just five games left to play.

T-MOBILE USA TEMPORARILY SUSPENDS CALLING SERVICE ON FACEBOOK
T-Mobile USA has temporarily suspended a new service that provides Facebook’s users with one-touch calling to their Facebook contacts from a personal computer and through the social network’s chat window.
On its Facebook page for Bobsled – a new brand aimed at connecting traditional telecommunications and Internet-based technologies – the nation’s fourth-largest mobile operator disclosed it is working with its “partners at Facebook to address their design questions related to differentiating the Bobsled experience from Facebook’s own created properties."
T-Mobile USA apologized for the disruption and said it is “looking forward to expanding the service with other features soon."
Last week the mobile operator introduced a Bobsled application for Facebook’s hundreds of millions of users; T-Mobile USA said the app could be downloaded for free.
Bellevue, Wash.-based T-Mobile USA noted it planned to evolve the Bobsled brand by offering such capabilities as video chat and the ability to place VoIP calls to mobile and landline numbers.
The mobile operator also plans to offer apps on smartphones and tablets across various mobile platforms regardless of the specific carrier that supports the devices.

TCM Classic Film Festival Returns to Hollywood
The TCM Classic Film Festival returns to Hollywood beginning Thursday for four days of classic films, celebrity appearances, guest speakers and panel discussions.
Most film festivals try to introduce new and upcoming films to the world, but the TCM festival showcases classic films with more than 70 screenings through May 1.
The main goal of the festival is “to further build a community for classic film lovers, create a place where they can gather, celebrate their shared passion and immerse themselves in a classic movie environment,” said Charlie Tabesh, senior vice president of programming at TCM and head programmer of the festival.
Now in its second year, the film festival will hold screenings at several Hollywood locations, including Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the Egyptian Theatre and poolside at The Roosevelt Hotel. Club TCM, a gathering spot for mingling and special guest speakers, will be located in the Blossom Room at the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, the site of the first Academy Awards ceremony.
Tabesh is especially excited for Buster Keaton's The Cameraman with live accompaniment by Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks orchestra. Other programming highlights include the world premiere of the 60th anniversary restoration of An American in Paris, a screening of Shall We Dance with Alexis Gershwin (niece of George and Ira Gershwin), Citizen Kane, A Streetcar Named Desire, Taxi Driver, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Shaft, Girl Happy, Goldfinger, To Kill a Mockingbird, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and West Side Story.
Kirk Douglas will join TCM host Robert Osborne for an interview on stage, leading into a screening of Stanley Kubrick’s film Spartacus on the second day of the festival. Peter O’Toole, Kirk Douglas, Warren Beatty, Leslie Caron, Roger Corman, Mariel Hemingway, Angela Lansbury, Jerry Mathers, Hayley Mills, Jane Powell, Debbie Reynolds, Mickey Rooney, Richard Roundtree, Barbara Rush and Alec Baldwin are some of the celebrities slated to appear during the festival.
“I think this year there is much more a sense of anticipation since we did it once successfully, so I hope we can surpass what we did last year,” Tabesh said.
